Participants Learn How To

Our Building Culturally Relevant Classrooms workshop series empowers educators with the skills they need to establish life-altering relationships with students. Participants identify and address their experiences with students and their own potentially disempowering mindsets.

A Four-Step Approach

Part 1: Understanding Self, Understanding Students

A moderated discussion that guides participants to a better understanding of their own backgrounds and histories, as well as misconceptions about the students they serve.

Topics Include:

  • Exploring the role that culture plays in the lives of educators and students
  • Reconnecting with the motivation and desire to teach
  • Addressing misconceptions about students and their communities
  • Understanding the urgency in our urban schools

Part 2: Building on Cultural Assets

This session builds participant awareness of an asset-based approach to educating students. We situate the realities of immigration, migration, assimilation, and the retention of cultural identity as they pertain to achievement and efficacy.

Topics Include:

  • Knowing relevant research on asset-based teaching
  • Nurturing cultural assets in the classroom
  • Valuing students’ lived experiences

Part 3: Enacting Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

With a focus on the significance of diversity, social justice, and the educational experiences of different cultural groups, we enable an increased understanding of societal complexity. We empower teachers to apply culturally relevant pedagogies in their classrooms.

Topics Include:

  • Building knowledge and sensitivity toward issues of equity and excellence
  • Fostering an environment of inquiry and critical thinking skills
  • Creating caring classrooms that build upon students’ literacies and develop their critical skills

Part 4: Sustaining Liberating Education

The concluding session drives participants to evaluate their educational philosophies and articulate views on social justice that align with their values and classroom management practices.

Topics Include:

  • Considering effective solutions for challenges faced in U.S. schools
  • Developing programs aligned with the Common Core and PARCC that help students become reflective about their lives, experiences, and universal issues of equity
