The Country’s Best Coaches: Ashley Gaymon in Brooklyn, NY

At CT3, we are fortunate to be able to meet and work closely with educators all over the country. We often find that the Real Time Teacher Coaches we train often hold different roles besides just “coach”. They’re not just No-Nonsense Nurturers, or skilled Real Time Teacher Coaches, but they’re also experts in a variety of subjects in their buildings to help better serve their students. Many are masters of lesson planning or teacher evaluations. Some are even Union representatives! Many are teacher leaders or school leaders that juggle both positions. We’re bringing recognition to many of the coaches we work with in schools across the country through our new blog series: “The Country’s Best Coaches”.

Thank you to Ashley Gaymon, K-2 Academic Dean and Real Time Teacher Coach at Achievement First Brownsville Elementary in Brooklyn, NY! Achievement First operates a network of 32 public charter schools in New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford, CT, Brooklyn, NY, and Providence, Rhode Island.

How did you get selected as a Real Time Teacher Coach? How did that make you feel?

I was selected as a Real Time Teacher Coach [RTTC] by my principal, Katherine Roger. Katherine participated in Real Time Teacher Coaching® when she worked for Teach For America in Washington, D.C. and found that it was a key lever in her development. It made me feel like she was invested both in my development as a coach and also in my teachers’ development.

What has your experience as a Real Time Teacher Coach taught you about yourself?

The RTTC experience has taught me that I can be a transformative No-Nonsense Nurturer® [NNN] of adults while also unleashing the No-Nonsense Nurturing potential in my teachers.

What other duties do you have at your school?

I have the pleasure of coaching and managing 22 wonderful teachers and overseeing the academic achievement for Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd grade in my school.

What do you feel you’re a ‘master’ in?

I am a “master” in supporting teachers with professional organization and effectiveness through the Together Teacher’s Comprehensive Calendar, Weekly Worksheets, & Later Lists. The TT support increases the quantity and quality of work that  teachers are able to accomplish in a very busy day, which ultimately makes for happier teachers inside and outside of school.

Can you tell us a story of student or teacher success you attribute to No-Nonsense Nurturer or Real Time Teacher Coaching?

RTTC transformed one of my 1st grade classrooms this year. Both co-teachers were engaged in deep reflection about dismantling any disempowering mindsets while simultaneously building skill in the NNN four-step model. As a result, their class average time on task is consistently at or above 90%, their scholars are invested in learning and in their teachers, and scholars are on track to meet their end of year math, reading, and writing goals!
